The James Bond actor has become the first global advocate for the elimination of mines and explosive hazards.

He will spend the next three years raising awareness of the United Nations Mine Action Service, and securing political and financial support for the project.

Meeting with Craig at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said: “You have been given a licence to kill (as James Bond), I’m now giving you a licence to save.”

Craig replied: “I am honored to accept this role, I’m humbled that I will get the chance to work next to people who are risking their lives every day to help ordinary people live ordinary lives. I will do my very best.”

Wirral actor Daniel Craig has rushed from the set of his latest movie Spectre to have a major knee operation.

He previously suffered a knee injury whilst filming high-impact scenes in the Austrian Alps in January, but made it worse when he continued to film in a fight scene just days later in London.

The 46-year-old took some time out from filming, but later returned and continued to shoot scenes for the most expensive 007 film yet, with a budget exceeding £200m.

Craig has now been filming more scenes in Mexico, but was forced to leave and was airlifted from the site to New York City, where his knee has been operated on.

In the mean time, director Sam Mendes has been using stunt doubles to create the high-impact opening scenes as he faces a race against time for the film’s October release.
