Daniel Craig is in talks to star opposite Halle Berry in Mustang director Deniz Gamze Erguven’s anticipated English-language debut pic Kings. The project is set against a backdrop of rising tensions in Los Angeles during the Rodney King trial in 1992. Craig will play Ollie, a loner who lives in South Central — one of its only white residents — who befriends Berry’s character, a tough, protective mother who looks after a group of kids. When the riots explode in the city, Craig’s character helps Berry, who is secretly in love with him, try and track down the kids from the worst of the violence. Kings will have the same mix of lightness and tough emotion that made Mustang such a standout.

Vincent Maraval’s Insiders is putting the film together and selling it with CAA handling domestic. Charles Gillibert, who produced Mustang, is lead producing.

The riots spread across L.A. and lasted six days, leading to 55 deaths in the wake of the acquittal of the policemen who beat King. The footage of that beating was infamously captured on home video and would become a symbol of police brutality.

Daniel Craig and Katherine Heigl are said to be finalizing deals to join Steven Soderbergh’s heist film Logan Lucky about brothers who plan a crime during a NASCAR race in Charlotte. The film is scheduled for a fall start date, which puts further into question the actor’s willingness to return to the Bond franchise for MGM. Pre-production on Logan Lucky starts this weekend at the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coca-Cola 600 and NASCAR says it has thrown its support behind the picture which is huge given that the sport has literally millions of fans across the country and advertisers flock to it. In fact, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series has been the No. 1 or No. 2 most-watched sport of the weekend 10 times in 2016 and it has had about 40M unique TV viewers over the last 12 races.

There have been no negotiations on where the Bond movie will land (Sony or Warner Bros. are out front on this) and although it was thought that negotiations might start after the first quarter 2016, parties are not likely to engage in negotiations until later this year. There is no workable script yet and the creative elements have yet to come into place. It has also been widely reported (and confirmed by Deadline) that Jamie Bell has discussed the Bond role with his Film Stars Don’t Die movie producer Barbara Broccoli (who has long produced the Bond movies). Craig has been very vocal about not wanting to do another Bond.

With Spectre still raking in the cash at the global box office, producer Barbara Broccoli has revealed that development on Bond 25 is set to get underway this coming Spring.

“We have put three years of work into Spectre,” Broccoli tells 20Minuten.ch. It was a thrill, but now we want to enjoy the success and the reactions of the audiences. In spring we start again.”

Bond 25 will likely need to find a new director, with Skyfall and Spectre helmer Sam Mendes having seeminly ruled out a return, and while there’s been a tonne of speculation as to Daniel Craig’s continued involvement, Broccoli is keen to have him back for a fifth outing:

“I hope we can continue with Daniel,” she says. “I love him, obviously not just me but also the audience. I will try my best to keep him on.”
