We can’t seem to get some good James Bond news lately as the project hits another major bump with possibly missing its scheduled November 2019 release date.

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – With the abrupt exit of director Danny Boyle, the next installment in the James Bond film franchise — the untitled Bond 25— will miss its Nov. 8, 2019, release date in North American theaters, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

It’s possible Bond 25 may not hit theaters until late 2020, according to sources. No recent Bond film has ever opened in summer. Even before Boyle departed, there was talk of pushing the movie’s release to early 2020.

Boyle and the Bond team were at odds over a script penned by Boyle collaborator John Hodge. A previous draft was written by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who also wrote Casino RoyaleQuantum of SolaceSkyfall and Spectre.

It could take months to come up with a script that pleases all parties, including whomever Broccoli and Wilson hire to direct the movie.

MGM hasn’t confirmed that Bond 25 will move. Eon couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

It looks like Showtime has put the television adaptation of Purity, a 20-episode miniseries that Daniel was attached to, in limbo. Jonathan Franzen, the author of the novel, spoke with The New York Times recently and opened up about the status of the project. It seems like Daniel has departed the show to do Bond 25. Here’s a snippet from the interview:

It had been Todd Field on the phone. Field, who wrote a good 30 percent of 20 hours’ worth of “Purity” scripts and who was going to run and direct the show, had called to give Franzen the news that preproduction had been halted. Franzen stared straight ahead, trying to refocus on an agenda for the day. Maybe birding? Nah, everyone goes birding with him.

The phone rang again, and again he stood up to take the call. It was Daniel Craig, who had been tentatively cast to star in the show. He was being summoned to do another James Bond movie and couldn’t wait for “Purity.” But, he told Franzen, the entire experience had been extraordinary. He was very sad this wasn’t going to work out. They’d tried, hadn’t they?

Eon Productions and MGM have set distribution plans for Bond 25. Universal Pictures will have international release as well as home entertainment releases. MGM and Annapurna will handle domestic distribution. Bond 25 is slated to be released in the UK on Octber 25th, 2019, and in the U.S. on November 9th, 2019. Production is scheduled to begin later this year on December.

DEADLINE – The deal was just closed by EON’s Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, MGM chairman of the board of directors Kevin Ulrich, MGM Motion Pictures Group president Jon Glickman and Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley. It puts the MGM logo front and center as distributor on a Bond film for the first time in nearly two decades.

As expected, Daniel Craig is back for his fifth film as 007, and Oscar-winner Danny Boyle is now set to direct a film that his Trainspotting partner John Hodge scripted based on an idea by Boyle, as Deadline revealed back in February. MGM and Danjaq weighed several directors, but then Boyle had his great idea and said he would direct, only if his concept was the one they went with. He had Hodge write a script that pleased everybody.

Wilson and Broccoli commented, “We are delighted to announce that the exceptionally talented Danny Boyle will be directing Daniel Craig in his fifth outing as James Bond in the 25th installment of the franchise. We will begin shooting Bond 25 at Pinewood Studios in December with our partners at MGM and thrilled that Universal will be our international distributor.”
